Health Resolutions for 2011: Part Two.

by T Alexander MD on January 5, 2011

Without further ado let me get to the list of simple steps to excellent health

  • Stand Up…. A study published this July in the American Journal of Epidemiology (1)  showed that sitting down for extended periods of time can decrease your life span. The study showed that something as simple as getting off your office chair or your couch and taking a quick walk can effect large improvements in health. So in addition to you regular program of physical activity, break up your periods of sitting down by taking those short walks or some other form of a physical break.
  • Get your beauty sleep…..To add to an already crowded field of research papers, one published this year in the Annals of Epidemiology showed that getting less than six hours of sleep a night increased one’s risk of diabetes and glucose intolerance by three times! (2) The Nurses Health Study also clearly documents a higher risk of heart disease in women who were sleep deprived. But the clearest effect of sleep deprivation is an increase in blood pressure and decreased production of a very healing and anabolic hormone – Growth Hormone. Be sure to incorporate good sleep hygiene practices and make it a priority to get the amount of sleep you need.
  • Cut out the soft drinks. By now most of us know about the slow corrosion that excess sugar has on the body so I trust most of you do not use excessive amounts of soda. But we have been mislead into thinking diet drinks are better. Studies show that consumption of diet drinks increases the risk of obesity and diabetes.
